The spinal cord is protected by the bony spinal column which is made up of bones called vertebrae. There are 31 vertebral levels.  The vertebrae are held together by interlocking and by ligaments.  If a a vertebrae is fractured it may lose its stability within the column and shift its position and press on the spinal cord.  The same thing can happen if the intervetebral ligaments are torn.  With trauma to the neck the possibility of instability exists hence spinal precautions are taken until the cervical spine can be cleared.  Failing to immobilize the spine, or removing an immobilizing collar too soon, can leave loose vertebrae free to move and result in injury to the spinal cord.  

It is important to diagnose existing spinal cord injuries because new treatments have developed which can lesson the extent of injury and allow for greater recovery.
