Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency and surgery must immediately be performed to release the compartment pressures or the muscle and nerve tissue will die. Our various muscles are wrapped in dense sheathing and contained within tight compartments. Injury, or pressure upon, tissue within a compartment compartment can start a vicious cycle of cell death, release of fluids, and a build up of pressure within the compartment that causes more cell death. Treatment is by placement of incisions which release the pressure. If surgery is not undertaken rapidly the condition can progress to loss of limb and death. Compartment syndrome has numerous causes including trauma, surgery, and casts that are too tight. If you or a loved one has suffered as a result of a misdiagnosis of compartment syndrome, contact Scott Law today.
